"The tragic loss of 21 of our children following the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in the boys' dormitory is a catastrophe beyond our imagination," read the official statement. The blaze claimed the lives of two boys who died in hospital while undergoing treatment, and 19 others whose bodies were recovered from the burnt dormitory. The school, which housed 330 boarders — 166 girls and 164 boys — now faces a grim reckoning.

"The parents of the 19 learners who succumbed are yet to identify their children. They will be proceeding to Naromoru for autopsy and processing," added the statement. In light of the tragedy, the government has stepped in to provide mental health and psychosocial support to the bereaved families, aiming to help them cope with their immense loss.

Since the incident, health professionals have been on-site, working tirelessly to provide specialized care for the injured. Their efforts focus on ensuring that those affected receive the necessary medical attention.

A Dark Cloud Over Kenya's Schools

Barely a day after the Hillside Endarasha fire, another incident occurred at Isiolo Girls High School, where a fire broke out in the evening. The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the dispatch of a rescue team to the scene. Preliminary reports indicate that several students were trapped in the dormitory, which houses Form One learners.

This fire at Isiolo Girls High School is part of a disturbing pattern, coming just after the Hillside tragedy. The situation has escalated, with a fourth fire reported at Ortum Boys High School. Videos circulating online show students scrambling to escape the thick smoke and salvage their belongings amidst the chaos.

"A fire erupted at Ortum Boys High School on Monday, marking another incident in a week plagued by fires across learning institutions," the local reports stated. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, with initial suggestions pointing towards an electrical fault.

Calls for Reform and Safety Enhancements

In the wake of these tragic events, there is increasing pressure on the government and educational authorities to address the underlying issues. Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has proposed the abolition of primary boarding schools, stating, “No primary school should be a boarding institution. Let parents take care of their children till they reach high school.” This proposal reflects a growing concern among parents and guardians about the safety of their children in boarding schools.

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to review and enhance safety standards across all schools. This includes strengthening emergency response strategies and improving infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

What Lies Ahead?

As the community grapples with the aftermath of these fires, efforts are underway to provide temporary accommodations and counseling services to displaced students. The focus now shifts to ensuring that such incidents do not recur and that adequate measures are put in place to safeguard the lives of students.

In these times of sorrow and reflection, it is crucial for all stakeholders — from government bodies to educational institutions and parents — to come together to ensure that the safety of students becomes a paramount priority. The tragic events at Hillside Endarasha Academy and other schools serve as a sobering reminder of the need for comprehensive reforms in the education sector.
